- COMMENT Artificial Intelligence Articles Notes
** Part 1
*** Clarifying Redefinitions: Life, Intelligence, etc
Before the essay starts, a bunch of terms will need to be
re-defined in ways amenable to our purposes. This is possible
because many of the traditional ways of thinking about concepts
like life, intelligence, etc are overly anthropocentric. Examples
will need to be pulled from literature on artificial life,
Bostrom’s book “Superintelligence”, Watts’ book
“Blindsight”. Also introduce concepts like p-zombies, alongside
the reason I disagree with it.
*** Organic Chauvinism and Free Will Against the idea of an inherent bias against the life status of digital organisms as alive, bring up the simulation hypothesis as an aside, then discuss compatibilism / lack of “true” free will as further evidence of no metaphysical barrier existing to prevent digital organisms from being considered alive. – After doing so, clarify that the free will question is one of sentience, not life, since even a believer in libertarian free will won’t assert this ability for all species.
*** Dwarf Fortress: Artificial Life? Bring these re-definitions into a concrete example by discussing the status of life in the simulation of Dwarf Fortress. Given that the simulation may not be convincingly complex, discuss at what point the agents in a simulation could be considered sentient. Self-awareness as a neural network monitoring all of its different guages and statistics?
